When a turf yard looks wrong a few years in, the fibers are rarely the problem. Wavy surfaces, low spots that hold water, seams that peak or open, edges that lift: trace them down and you land under the turf nearly every time. Turf is a flexible sheet. It has no structure of its own and no ability to bridge a dip. Whatever shape the ground beneath it takes, the surface will take too, on a delay of a season or two.

This is inconvenient for shoppers, because the base is the one part of the job you cannot evaluate by looking at samples. Two installs can use identical turf and identical infill and diverge completely because one crew excavated properly and compacted in layers and the other saved a day. The finished yards look the same on handover. They stop looking the same after the first serious storm and the first winter.

What excavation depth is actually for

Digging out is not about making room for turf, which is thin. It is about removing material that will move. Topsoil, old sod and root mass are organic, and organic material decomposes and compresses at different rates in different spots. Leave it under a turf lawn and you have built a surface over something that is slowly disappearing in patches. That is the mechanism behind most lumpy turf yards, and it is also the most tempting corner to cut because nobody can see it afterward.

The right depth depends on what the site is and what the area will do. Heavy clay behaves differently from sandy soil. A pet run and a putting green have different requirements from a lightly used side yard. What you want to hear from an installer is a reason attached to a number, based on your yard. What should worry you is a single depth quoted for every job regardless of what is under it.

Aggregate, lifts and why compaction is not optional

The base is crushed aggregate, and the point is a layer whose particles lock mechanically into each other so it stops behaving like loose material and starts behaving like a slab that still lets water through. Getting there requires the right blend, the right moisture and mechanical compaction. Too many fines and the base seals up and stops draining. Too coarse and it never knits together. Installers who do this constantly have a strong opinion about the material, and it is a fair question to ask.

Compaction happens in lifts, meaning layers, each one compacted before the next goes down. A compactor only densifies material to a limited depth. Dump the full base thickness in one go and press the top and you have a firm crust over loose material, which is precisely the condition that settles unevenly later. Watching a crew work in layers with the plate running between them is one of the clearest signals that you hired well.

Grading: water has to leave, and it has to leave somewhere

Turf drains through perforations in its backing, which people hear as the drainage problem being solved. It is not. All that does is move water from the top of the turf into the base. Where it goes next is a decision somebody has to make on purpose. The base gets graded to a deliberate fall, away from the house and toward a place where water can actually exit the area. Flat is not the goal. Flat in one plane, tilted in the direction you chose, is the goal.

Where gravity and native soil cooperate, grading may be all the site needs. Where they do not, in heavy clay, in a low back yard, in a flat green surface, the route has to be built: a collection layer or line under the base carrying water to a point where it can discharge. That is a design decision made before excavation, not something added after you notice a puddle. Any installer who will not say specifically where your water goes has not thought about it.

Edges, transitions and what holds everything still

A turf area needs a perimeter that does two jobs: retain the aggregate base so it cannot spill or migrate, and give the turf something solid to be anchored into. Where turf meets planting beds, borders or a drop in elevation, edging is installed and the turf is fastened along it. Without that, the base slowly loses material at the boundary, the turf edge starts to lift, and once an edge is moving it begins pulling on the nearest seam.

Edges are also where amateur work shows itself first. Cuts that follow the perimeter cleanly, a turf line that sits tight against its border with no gap and no bulge, blades falling naturally across the transition instead of standing up in a visible ridge: those are the marks of someone who has done a lot of these. When you look at an installer past work, ignore the middle of the lawn and go stand at the edges.

How to tell, during the job, that it is being done right

You get one chance to see the base, and it lasts about a day. Be home for it. What you want to see: real excavation with material actually leaving the site, aggregate arriving and going in as layers, a compactor running between those layers rather than once at the end, water used to bring the material to the right moisture, and grade being checked with a straightedge and a level instead of by eye from six feet away.

What should raise questions: turf going over existing lawn, a thin scrape of soil removal, the entire base depth placed in one pass, or nobody able to tell you where water is meant to go. None of those mean failure this year, and that is exactly the problem, because the bill for them arrives later. Ask your questions while the ground is still open. After the turf is down and brushed, everyone is looking at the same green surface.

Can I just lay turf over my existing lawn?

You can, and it will look acceptable for a short while. The grass and topsoil under it will keep settling and decomposing unevenly, and within a couple of seasons that shows as dips and ripples across the surface. There is also no compacted layer to spread foot traffic, so paths develop fast. It is the single most common reason a turf yard has to be redone.

How deep should the base be?

There is no universal number, and be skeptical of anyone who offers one before seeing your yard. Depth follows the soil, the drainage situation and what the area will be used for, since a dog run, a putting green and a low traffic side yard are not the same problem. What matters is that your installer can explain why they chose the depth they did for your site.

What does compaction actually do?

It forces the aggregate particles to lock together so the layer behaves as a stable unit instead of loose fill. That stability is what keeps the surface flat under years of walking, and it is what prevents settlement from opening seams and creating low spots. Compaction has to be done in layers, because a compactor only densifies material to a certain depth per pass.
